Dare To Wear: Black

January 22, 2018

Be the change you wish to see in the world. During the Golden Globes, women attending the  event came together in the stand against abusive or objectifying behavior. Women of all ages and looks are treated poorly everyday, and unfortunately they seldom have the opportunity to speak out for help.

Due to the recent awareness of the many sexual harassment cases that have been silenced for so long, big name celebrities ranging from Oprah Winfrey to Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman to Katherine Langford, and Meryl Streep to Shailene Woodley all joined together by wearing black for this event to express the opposition to the neglectful misconduct towards women. By doing so, they used their platform to voice their view and affect the thousands of viewers by opening their eyes to the sexual harassment around them.

With the #timesup and the joint effort to wear black, this year’s award show was more than just giving and receiving  Golden Globe awards, and the acceptance speeches were more than just simple thank you’s to the fans and to the people responsible for the success that the actors have achieved. There was a major purpose behind it all. The fact that they were all wearing black isn’t the point, but rather the meaning of the black attire showing solidarity. The fact of the matter is that all women of different ethnicities, beliefs, and outer appearances stood together to put an end to the objectifying behavior that many of them receive. With that being said, hopefully those who tuned in to watch or those who heard about the event will take that step of courage to create a positive change.
