He Shoots! He…Misses!!

November 9, 2017

Standing at 5’10 and 140 pounds, Sophomore Ryan McCloskey is a rare occurrence on this Fruita Monument Soccer team. Starting goalie on the varsity team is not an easy feat in of itself, however, McCloskey is a special case. Out of the 6 sophomores that have earned a spot to play for Fruita’s Varsity team, he’s earned the opportunity to start as one of the main stars on the field. However, the road to this great accomplishment was not easy.

Playing since the earliest years of his childhood, Ryan has been always had a love for the sport. Always striving to be the best he can be, Ryan’s determination has kept him going at full speed. “I’ve always loved the game and how it works. My team’s encouragement has always pushed me to become better,” Ryan said.

His hard work not only has improved himself, but his team as well. The Fruita soccer team focuses on self improvement, and the coaches strongly push the team to not only be the best on the field, but off it as well.  Ryan’s teammate, and fellow sophomore, Ethan McCallum told us “Practicing with the upperclassmen and the lessons from our coach has taught me how to improve my self discipline outside of soccer as well.” These lessons learned are important because it shows that coaches care about you, and not only want to win on the field, but off it as well.

They have not only grown as a team, but they strongly believe in themselves improving. This is a great example of how sports can positively impact everyone’s lives, no matter the age or the sport!
