State of the Union Address

March 30, 2018

The State of the Union is a very important yearly address delivered each January by the president of the United States to all of congress, providing the administration’s view of the state of the nation and plans for future action. This address which is required by the constitution in Article II, Section 3, Clause I of the Constitution, states that the president “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient”. The first being given in 1790 by George Washington, paved the way for multiple similar annual addresses for the next few centuries. Although format was broken, with the address being delivered by writing, or publicized differently, since then the American public and congress have received a detailed overview of the nations current situation and plans for the future.

“I think that the idea of a State of the Union address given by a president has really good standards set, a president basically tells the American public what they are planning to do over the next year, and it gives the American public something to look forward to, changes and even future vision, and it allows other people in the United States to build on that and move forward” is what history teacher Anne Mccorkle says when asked about her thoughts on the state of the union as a necessity for the American public and government. When others were asked of their opinion on comparisons between previous state of the unions and this last one, all declined to provide opinion due to not wanting to provoke or give inflammatory opinion. When other students were asked on their opinion on the State of the Union, answers such as “what is that” and “that’s for old people” were given. Today’s younger generations are not interested in government activities and long and not so entertaining addresses and speeches.

As observed by many, only some adults seem to be interested in the State of the Union and the rest of the population within our community is oblivious of such events. According to Statista.com, viewership of the annual inauguration ia slowly falling. Although not noticeable by year and there are observed outliers, the annual address throughout the decades has become less viewed. When compared to president Barack Obama’s final speech, President Donald Trump had 2 million less viewers, but when compared to president Barack Obama’s first address, Trump had eight million more viewers. This fluctuating decrease comes to prove that this annual speech is slowly losing popularity within the American people.

In his address, Donald Trump covered current issues such as tax cuts, eliminating regulations, energy exporting, unemployment numbers and eliminating Isis. He provided a good overview of his first year in presidency and provided future plans. He still has 3 more addresses to give within his term.
