Puerto Rico is Still Shaking

 The past couple of weeks in Puerto Rico has left the island barely hanging on. According to the New York Times, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit early morning on Monday, January 2nd, coming after many previous smaller earthquakes.

        After Tuesday’s big quake there were three more aftershock earthquakes estimated to be 5.6, 5.2 and 4.5 magnitude. These shocks took out most of the power to the island, destroying homes and leaving at least one person dead. At least 45 earthquakes of 3.0 magnitude or higher were registered since early Tuesday morning, according to the Puerto Rico Seismic Network. 

        With the chance of another high magnitude earthquake, thousands of Puerto Rico citizens are sleeping in their cars or tents afraid of the structures where they live, according to the New York Times. “There are a lot of people who prefer to sleep outside, or anywhere that is not their own home,” Gov. Wanda Vázquez said. “This is very important for people to understand and realize what these two quakes meant to us.”

        With the recent hurricane in 2017, Puerto Rico is still recovering and was shocked to have this unforeseen season of earthquakes struck hard on the island. Citizens are still worried that there will be another earthquake coming soon.
