Volleyball Wrap Up
November 6, 2017
It has been a long time coming for the Fruita Monument volleyball team to make it to state. During the 2015-2016 season Fruita hosted the first round of playoffs but, their dreams of a state title were cut short with their loss to Pine Creek. This year they are now in the position to do so with an undefeated record in league and only one loss in the preseason. Behind team captain Dana Thompson who is headed to the South Dakota School of Mines to continue her education and volleyball career, the team’s roster is top to bottom solid. Morgan Laing, a key player specializing in defense for the team believes that, “ We are more mature and have more experience with eight seniors and two juniors making up the majority of the team. We know what will work and what hasn’t in the past and our loss last year has motivated us to get farther this year.” They have acquired two new assistant coaches with the impressive resumes of Rusty Crick, the former coach and RMAC hall of famer of the Colorado Mesa University Women’s Volleyball team and Dr.Kennan Vance, the BYU Men’s volleyball standout. Laing says, “ Having coaches that we can relate to and know about certain positions has helped visibly grow our blocking, passing and defense.” FMHS volleyball will finish league play on the 20th against Durango and head to finish off their schedule with matches against Liberty High School and compete in the Rangeview tournament. With a ranking as of this week at number six in the state, they have a perfect opportunity to continue their season and possibly host for the second year in a row.
