Timely Twins

January 22, 2018

The cliche twin argument “I was born before you” just got better. New Years Eve in Kern County, CA Delano Regional Medical Center, Maria Esperanza Flores Rios gave birth to her twins of different years. “I feel really happy because I just had my two babies” Maria says minutes after delivery. (Her son being born roughly at 11:58pm and daughter at 12:16am.) Maria gave birth to Joaquin Ontiveros, Jr. naturally and easy but his twin sister, Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros was slightly breach causing them to do an emergency C-section.

“I’ve been doing this for 35 years, and I’ve never had this before,” said Seyed Tamijidi, the doctor who delivered the twins. So what are the odds for twins to be born in different years? There are about 4 million births a year in the U.S. That would suggest these events are as rare as 1 in 2 million. Someone visiting the Grand Canyon is more likely to die by falling off the edge (1 in 1.5 million. (according to Freakonomics.com.)

They will definitely have to explain their case for a long time. When you think of twins they are born on the same day and only minutes apart. I guess these kids will have their sense of differences on their birthdays.
