The 45th Annual G7 Summit
September 3, 2019
The 45th annual G7 Summit was held on August 24th through the 26th. Many crucial topics were covered at the conference, such as the ongoing crisis involving climate change, relations with Iran, a possible fair deal with China, and briefly covered the plans for next years G7 Summit. Trade, Iran, Ukraine, and Libya seemed to be the main focus, leaving out several more pressing topics. Here are the four main takeaways.
Trade was brought up the most, and the G7 decided that they are committed to open and fair global trade with China and to the stability of the global economy. Although they have not reached an agreement, they hope to reach one in 2020 to simplify regulatory barriers and modernize international taxation.
When it came to Iran, two main objectives were reached: to ensure that Iran can never acquire nuclear weapons, and promote peace and stability in the region. Another issue brought up was how to handle relations with Libya. The G7 summit came up with supporting a truce with Libya that can lead to a ceasefire, but they believe only a political solution will ensure the stability of Libya. In that regard they supported the work on the United Nations and the African Union in setting up an inter-Libyan conference.
In recent news climate crisis has been a big debate. President Trump wants to keep the United States as “the number one energy producer in the world.” Trump has expressed that he wants to stop spending money in areas he feels aren’t helping the environment, such as windmills. “I think I know more about the environment than most people. I want clean air. I want clean water. I want a wealthy country. I want a spectacular country with jobs, with pensions and so many things and that’s what we’re getting,” Trump said. But the question still remains, how will the government help us if they’re not willing to spend a little money?
