The macaroni and cheese is boiling on the stovetop like a thing alive, more cheese than macaroni. A small sea of nasty yellow over which Patti presides with the utmost pride. She’s preparing her special little dairy volcano. It bubbles. Soon, she too will erupt. 

Patti, somehow unknowingly, is lactose intolerant.
