This summer on June 29th the supreme court outlawed affirmative action in college admissions. What this means for incoming college applicants, is that it is prohibited to use your race as a factor as to why you should be accepted into said school.
The vote in the Supreme Court was 6-3 and 6-2 in the two different cases. Conservatives praised the decision saying that the constitution should be “Color Blind”, and prominent conservative figure Donald Trump says it’s, “a great day for America”. Democrats however were not happy with the decision saying affirmative action was remedying the history of race discrimination in the country.
But, this does not mean applicants all together cannot mention their race, students can still mention how their race have affected their and others life, but this mention of race can not be a consideration when colleges consider accepting students, which was a major factor with top schools for a while.
This decision will greatly affect students of color in this country and can severely impact the amount of diversity found inside these schools. The students who take pride in their race and students whose race is such a massive part of their life will be affected by this decision the most.
