Attention all bookworms! The school year is in full swing, and clubs and activities are starting up! One club is the Bookworm Club! In Bookworm Club, students meet in the library during lunch to discuss their current reading novels. Many think this club is a book club, but it is actually more free-spirited than that. Students can gather with their personal reading novels and discuss questions or overall just chat about their books.
One of the members of the Bookworm Club is Senior Emily Ockander who said, “I like that I can talk about books, and just hang out with people who have a common interest with me.”
Students can share book themes and ideas while also recommending books to other students with the same interests. “Having book recommendations from friends is nice because they will usually know better if you would like a book, and you automatically have a friend to talk about the book with if you like it! Plus, often people will lend you their copy of the book if they have it,” Ockander says.
Bookworm club is a unique option for people who love to read, but don’t want to coordinate with others about what to read (like what a traditional book club is). It is an amazing opportunity for readers of all abilities to come together and share their thoughts and ideas on literature, without the stress of finding a book everyone will enjoy and everyone will finish reading. “ It’s not a regular book club because we don’t all read a single book and talk about it. We are just people who love reading! I think that regular book clubs are great, but I think this works better for a school club because it’s hard to find one book that everyone loves, plus we can get to know eachother better when we discuss things other than one specific book,” stated Ockander.
Members don’t have to commit to an entire book to have chapters read each week and anyone can show up whenever! There is no expectation or responsibility which is what usually happens in a book club. The flexibility allows for a lot of fun and creativity to occur without being tied down to a specific book or schedule.
People who would be interested in this club would be those who like reading (obviously) and people who like to socialize with other readers. This club is a great opportunity to make connections with people who love reading and create lasting friendships as well with people who all have the same common interest: reading!
Bookworm club meets every Monday in the library at lunch. Contact Heather Nicholson if you have any questions, or just show up! Bring your book and get ready to mingle! All readers are welcome!
