When looking at the school itself, one of the most important aspects is culture. Culture is the building ground for everything that happens, how the students interact with the school: how staff interact with students, and how students interact with each other. One of the most prevalent driving forces behind our school’s culture is the numerous clubs we have here at the school.
It is said that variety is the spice of life, and this remains true for our school clubs. Fruita Monument High School includes over thirty clubs ranging from clubs surrounding sports such as Ski and Board Club or Basketball Club, clubs surrounding games such as Chess Club and the E-Sports team, and clubs to help the community or to be creative such as the Student Council, Key Club, or Art club. All of these clubs are unique and allow students to express themselves in their own unique ways.
The culture that extends from these clubs is also a valued feature. Having so many clubs here at the school, there are numerous impacts felt on the school identity. Culture in itself is described as a belief, art, community, and place to belong. In the end that is really what these clubs are, a place to belong for everyone. Having clubs of so many different types creates a more diverse group of students. Soon the school becomes a place where artists of many mediums converge, even mediums some might not consider such as the perfect spin on a ping pong ball or the school news presented every quarter.
Culture is a very important feature of a school or any community. It becomes the driving factor behind multiple aspects of life for students and staff. It is what separates Fruita from any other school. Culture is what drives fun events like assemblies, extra events such as the dances or bonfire, and pushes athletes further. Culture is driven by the students and the clubs they belong to, that sense of identity that can be found with these multiple pieces.
Other than being a cultural aspect and a unique feature of the school, what are the reasons why a student might join a school club? Alongside a sense of belonging, a school club can be an opportunity to do many things. These can include socializing with friends or meeting new ones. It could be an opportunity to give back to the community either to the school or through community service. It might even be something entirely new that you might just want to discover first hand for yourself.
There is no harm in trying something new, and with so many clubs, there are so many options. Or it could simply be something fun that you enjoy doing, this could be a hobby or something new. The options seem limitless and possibly even overwhelming, but a student can join several clubs. Some clubs such as Newspaper, Yearbook, or Student Council take the place of classes throughout the day, but most clubs happen during time off such as before school, after school, or during lunch.
Clubs have become an important aspect of the culture here at Fruita Monument High School and likely will continue to be an important aspect of the school. They are a cause to create something or give a part of yourself to the school. They are a cause of many fun times, opportunities to socialize with friends, meet new people and make new friends, and opportunities to enjoy doing something that you love to do.
