Last spring they had an interpretive dance night and they’re “talking about possibly doing that later this spring again,” said Herring. People can come and just dance to a pop song for fun. This is an opportunity for the students to perform, and for others to be able to get involved and have a great time dancing.
Herring said, “It’s the most fun P.E. elective there is.” He is not the only one with that opinion, one of his students in the dance class said she would recommend this class to others, and she thinks it’s really fun.
“You don’t have to be skillful at dance, so I think it’s accessible for anybody. We have everybody from… cheerleaders or members of the pom’s team Did you know that Fruita Monument High School has a dance class? It’s been going on since before Covid, but not very many people know about it. Christian Herring is a phenomenal drama teacher, who decided to start a dance class at FMHS during the first hour when he found out that other high schools in the district already had one. “I used to do um, Richard Simons workout videos with my mom and my sister when I was a kid…so I just like fun dance that gets you moving,” Herring said.
The dance class has a few mini-units. They do “a little bit of ballet, a little bit of jazz, a little bit of tap, and a little bit of hip hop.” He doesn’t try to make it hard technically and puts his efforts toward making it fun. Sometimes they just turn on a pop song and make up a cool dance to it without using any specific style.
I love to dance and they take the class, but we also have like our friends in the side-by-side class, or just people of all skills or abilities can take this class and just have fun with it,” said Herring.
