The third Monday of January is a day when US citizens celebrate a man who stood up for racial justice and broke barriers for people of color. But this year the holiday lines up with the same day his actual birthday being January 15th. Martin Luther King Jr was a minister and activist from the 1950-1960s until his assassination on April 4th, 1968. He is most known for his famous “ I Have a Dream” speech that sparked equality in a nation that was divided.
As most people know Martin Luther King Jr. Today is a day off from work and school, but the true meaning is the birthday of this historic activist. Many people celebrate the day by gathering together and having parades, marches, and listening to civil rights activists. Even in the small town of Grand Junction, there is an annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade.
According to KJCT “The event started with a proclamation ceremony at City Hall where the community and its leaders gathered. Speeches from the community leaders and the mayors of Palisade, Grand Junction, and commemorated Dr. King’s memory.”
At this event leaders also gave out awards to members of the community who represent civil rights movements here in Grand Junction. The day also consisted of a march from City Hall to Colorado Mesa University’s main campus.
The United States is given one day a year to remember and honor a man who exemplified the heart of humanity. This day is special to many and is celebrated in even the most remote corners of the United States.
