Exactly 20 years ago the original and iconic Mean Girls movie made a huge impact on the film industry. Starring Lindsi Lohan, Rachel Mcadams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert. The movie revolves around the chaotic life of a teenage girl in the early 2000s and the drama that comes with that role. On January 12, the much-anticipated, Mean Girls remake came out. Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez it had exciting and unexpected moments. But it wasn’t one of the typical movie remakes that we have been seeing in the past years. Instead, it was a musical film, based on the 2018 Broadway show that was then based on the 2004 original movie. That’s not the only difference between them though, the latest is more revolved around the use of social media and the style of clothing has changed. From wearing jeans and cute blouses to cargos and oversized sweatshirts. Of course, different actors and actresses are playing the characters and things are more modern. The new movie features Renee Rapp, Angourie Rice, Avantika Vandanapu, and Bebe Wood as the main Plastics. It also includes some of the original Mean Girls cast. Ms. Norbury, played by Tina Fay, and The Principal, played by Tim Meadows end up married and continue to work at the school. Lindsi Lohan, the actor of Cady Haron in the original, appears in a cameo and reads off the questions at the mathlete competition. Details like these are what made the Mean Girls fans so excited to watch the new movie.
Overall the movie was rated 2.2 stars out of 5. Some say that it was a great mix between the 2018 Broadway show and the 2004 movie. The music and overall acting of the movie were just the right type for what they were going for. On the other hand, some think that although it was rated pg 13 it was much too inappropriate for kids under the age of 16. it’s sexualization and the way that the characters dress is what causes some to maybe not appreciate the movie as much as others. Overall the movie was a good mix and a lot of people enjoyed its cleverness.
