New school year, new chemistry curriculum.
Though the old one worked fine, the company Savvas decided it was time to move on. Out with the old and in with the new. But with this new curriculum, some things come with a challenge. One of the main challenges is how much work the teacher has to put into making the course.
Many more problems have arisen by the new curriculum.
To list a few:
- Labs are too long, around 8 pages long for each lab. This makes the teacher have to do more work than they need to because they have to shorten it.
- Not even the chemistry teacher has full access to the resources.
- They do not supply enough practice problems when it comes to math or problems kids may have a harder time understanding. So instead the teacher has to go out of their way to find extra practice problems for the students.
Though there are many negatives to the new curriculum, there is one positive. In the curriculum, it follows a storyline and it always relates to real life.
But for the time being the negatives overcome the positive to the new curriculum by Savvas.
According to Terri Timmer, FMHS chemistry teacher, she agrees that the old curriculum was better managed and easier to understand than the new curriculum they are using now.
In the years past, the old chemistry curriculum has led students to success in college who want to continue their education in chemistry, so some may argue that there was no need to change the curriculum, but maybe the change of the curriculum could be very helpful.
We will see how well the new curriculum will turn out once it’s released, not next year but the year after.
