Fall in the Grand Valley is the perfect time of year to get outdoors and enjoy some of the local scenery. Hiking is one of the most popular ways to do just that.
Some amazing local hikes, including Devils Canyon Trail System and the Monument Canyon Trail, are both located right outside of Fruita. Devils Canyon offers a large collection of trailheads with varying degrees of difficulty, from easy to strenuous. Its more challenging trails take hikers up the side of the Colorado National Monument, while other routes offer hikers a more leisurely path along a dried-up riverbed. The more observant visitors are likely to spot the abundant wildlife, such as deer, rabbits, and even big–horned sheep!
The Monument Canyon Trail is an easy hike that is also perfect for dogs (which technically should be leashed). This trail takes you along a path providing a view of many of the Monument’s stunning rock structures.
A great way to discover these and other trails is the AllTrails app, which is free and easy to use. Simply type in the location and level of difficulty and the app will display images and a short description of each hike.
It is recommended to wear sturdy hiking boots, or at least closed-toe shoes, a hat, and sufficient sunblock. Staying well hydrated is essential, so take plenty of water and perhaps a snack to enjoy.
Those who make the effort to go out on a hike here in Fruita, or anywhere in the Grand Valley, will be rewarded with views of scenery and wildlife that people travel from all over the world to experience!
