Former Mesa County Commissioner Tina Peters was found guilty of election interference on August 13, 2024.
Peters was found guilty of seven out of ten counts. Four out of the seven are felonies. Tina Peters’ trial was pushed back two times starting in 2023. The first time, her trial was scheduled to be held in September of 2023 but was pushed back to February of 2024. Then, it was pushed back until August of 2024.
After the results of the 2020 election, rumors and theories spread about the election. Some theories consisted of voters believing the election was stolen or rigged. These theories lead to multiple cases of people tampering with election equipment, including former President Donald Trump.
Back in 2020, Peters was accused of “tampering with an election machine.” and “helping breach the county’s election computer systems.” Sometime after that, the county “found over five hundred unread ballots”. According to The National Broadcasting Company (NBC), Peters allegedly took a coworker’s security badge, and allowed an unauthorized person to access voting equipment”.
In 2022, Peters pleaded not guilty on all counts.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Peters was found guilty of “ three counts of attempting to influence a public servant, one count of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, one count of first-degree official misconduct, one count of violation of duty, and one count of failing to comply with the secretary of state.”
Peters is scheduled to be sentenced on October 3, 2024
