You’re about to bite into a burger you just ordered from Burger King. Its smell wafts towards you, and as you take your first bite, the burger is somehow… greasy and dry at the same time. The bacon is just a little too soft, the lettuce is soggy and the cheese has a weird texture. The ultimate disappointment seeps through your pores as you look up a new place to get food.
For all the foodies out there like me who love to try new restaurants and dishes, Karma Kitchen might just be the perfect restaurant for you to try out. It’s quiet, calm and great for your appetite.
When I first went to Karma, it was for my birthday. Some friends and I wanted to try something different. Imagine my delight when I realized Indian food was just down the street from me.
To truly commentate on a restaurant, you must look at three main categories: food, ambiance and service.
Their chicken tikka masala is perfect for beginners- creamy, tangy sauce with huge chunks of tender chicken. Madi Shaver, a Junior, says she “loves the chicken biryani,” and their lassis are like “milkshakes on steroids.”
If you’re dying to try something more adventurous, their lamb curry or spicy fish vindaloo might surprise you. The spices and flavors are different than what we’re used to. They make all your taste buds tingle with tangy, savory curry and fiery vindaloo.
I’ve tried a lot of their menu, and only two things didn’t blow me away. If you’re looking for vegetables, you’ll find many dishes, but none are my favorite. Their tofu curry was a little boring in comparison to their other curries, and the saag paneer was a little too simple for my liking.
When asked to comment on the restaurant’s feel, Shaver said, “ I like the decor, and it’s never super busy. It’s nice that it’s quiet and the seats are comfortable.” And if you asked me, I would have to agree. There are never more than a couple of other tables occupied. It’s calm, and the lights aren’t too bright. They have free lollipops at the front for kids,(which always adds a few points from me) and the layout is gorgeous.
However, sometimes the quiet can be a little uncomfortable. There’s no background noise to drown out the awkward first date where neither of you wants to talk- but it’s nice when you feel like a quiet afternoon with no one to bother you.
The one thing I dock points on is service. Yes, they bring you water and your food. They don’t bother you while you’re eating at all, which can be nice. If you need more water, prepare to flag your server down to get something- they come over when the bill is going to be paid and that’s about it in my experience.
Amazing food and calm ambiance lead to one thing- me spending money. Most of the time, I might regret it, but dying of happiness from eating Indian food would be a pretty good way to go.
