With Homecoming approaching fast, we’re all excited for spirit week, aren’t we? When it comes to the dress-ups and color wars, it’s pretty awesome. But the real highlights of Spirit Week are the after-school activities. From the sports to the dance and all the games you can handle, it’s incredible! But something happened this year that you might have heard about.. This year, the bonfire was canceled due to restrictions and regulations by the D51 school district.
According to the Mesa County Website, All fires whether bonfires or campfires, are being restricted due to unsafe conditions and human safety. Continuing, the website talks more about the recent wildfires and subsequently declining air conditions. With all this heat and all this fire, they’re making a point about how excessive fires can harm the community even more, and possibly be a danger to people nearby. So to sum it up, they don’t want to add fire to fire.
But then what can/can’t we do firewise? Mesa County Website states that all fireworks, bonfires, temporary campfires, explosive target shooting, smoking outside of a designated area, and using an unsafe internal combustion engine are all advised against and restricted. On the other hand, permanent fire pits and grills, fire features and torches, sheriff’s office controlled burning, and contained fires are allowed with the right equipment. (Keep in mind that if you need fire use like this, forms are available to fill out through the sheriff’s office.)
So what will we do to replace the bonfire this homecoming week? Well, I wasn’t able to find any for sure information or updates yet, but I heard down the grapevine that there is allegedly a possible movie night, and a possible Wave appearance/other food trucks! And I am completely confident that it will be just as good, if not better. So let’s have an amazing homecoming week!
