The Oscars 2025 was another great year filled with unforgettable speeches and award-winning actors, directors, filmmakers, and more.
What are the Oscars?
The Oscars are where people get recognition and awards for movies. It’s a big deal because it recognizes and upholds greatness and success in the motion picture arts and science, as well as celebrates cinematic imagination that’s inspiring.
People who are nominated at the Oscars are awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and get approval from the industry. Winning at the Oscars is a big achievement because it boosts you up in the filmmaking, actor, and director industry, making you more likely to be picked for great opportunities and higher-profile projects. It’s a big cultural tradition for Hollywood to put on every year, just like the Grammys.
How does it work?
The winners of the Oscars are selected by the nominees by the number of votes of all members. Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science are asked to rank all the best picture nominees and movies, and actors. Dani Lobdell, an FMHS student, says, “I kind of believe the way the voting works is unfair. Why is it only the members of the academy that get to vote? I feel the people outside should have some say because a lot of the time, who is picked is not who everyone outside the academy agrees with. But other times it is, I just feel more people should have a say in it!”
Then they go through all the ballots and make a list of every film that is listed as the best. There are 19 academy branches they have to vote for. And there are around 10,000 members who get to vote, and that team is built up of many professionals from all of the branches like the film industry, directors, actors, producers, writers, editors, etc… They all vote on Best pictures, Best animations, Best actors, and more.
2025 Oscars opinions?
According to USA Today, Kelly Lawyer believes that this year’s ceremony was“Inoffensive and somewhat bland. The 2025 Oscars lacked passion and fervor or a distinctive hook that makes the ceremony more than just a generic recitation of winners. From the speeches to O’Brien’s bits to the presenter banter, everything was too innocuous to be totally interesting.” She believes this because the Oscars lacked “feelings”.
Some say it was kind of uninteresting because it seemed as if not everyone was excited to be there and not entertaining for people to watch. She also explained that it was kind of fake. It was believed that there was no real raw emotion or interesting drama.
Although some believe it was boring and uninteresting, some other people were interested to see if the best actors, filmmakers, and movies in their mind won a deserving Oscar award because around 19.7 million people watched the 97th Oscar this year.
