Beginning the summer of 2027, there will be some construction work done here at FMHS. The ultimate goal is for our school to have more space and ultimately be more flexible. There will be renovations on existing parts of our school as well as some added wings being brought to fruition. With these big changes being brought about, there are also many opinions and both pros and cons to this construction are being discussed.
The Robotics and Computer Science teacher, Andrew Decker, is one of the lucky teachers to have been given a new room after the construction. He shares some of the changes being made in the school.
“The area between the football coach’s office and the Agriculture rooms, where there is currently a passage for cars, is now going to be the Tech labs (idk what it’s called yet). These will comprise three rooms. One will be the robotics lab (Mr. Decker’s), one will be an engineering lab and one will be Robin Summerville. The third is yet to be determined.
Along with these changes, some issues have arisen. One of these is that because the area between the Ag building and the coaches’ office is going to be closed off, traffic flow may be more congested and interrupted.
Junior Samantha Ross comments, “The flow of our parking lot is already stuffy and tight, and it takes forever to get out. Cutting one of the exits will only make it worse.”
Ross has a fair point. The flow of traffic both in our parking lot and down Wildcat Boulevard has previously proven to be an issue. This leaves us questioning the school; are there any plans in place to aid in the congestion of traffic that will be caused by this construction at our school?
Another change that will be taking place here is in the breezeway between sophomore hall and the main building. This will now be a fully enclosed hallway. Not only this, but the opposite end of sophomore hall, towards the highway, will also be altered. When you walk out those end doors, there will be another hallway connecting to the main building. There will remain an open space in the middle, between this added hallway and the other new hallway. This will be an enclosed courtyard that students will still have access to.
The new rooms being added here are going to be science labs with more up-to-date equipment and more space for students to participate in the lab days.
The definite details of this construction are still being determined, however, this is the most current and up-to-date information there is surrounding the matter. The project won’t even begin until the summer of 2027, so just a small number of our current school population will get to experience these changes. It’ll be up to them, just how functional and beneficial this construction will be. Good luck and thank you to the men and women who will be doing these renovations on our school!
