Competition. It’s a factor that humans face day by day. Whether it’s a sport, hobby, or even something like a popularity contest, humans are constantly competing with one another. At FMHS , Homecoming week means another competition, specifically, one to see who in the school is the most spirited.
The week of September 8-13 marked the Homecoming week which set the stage for the Homecoming royalty competition. In this competition, approximately 40 students competed in various challenges based on school spirit to earn one of the eight crowns for Homecoming royalty. But how does one even get selected to compete?
Two weeks prior to the competition, on the graduation class Google Classrooms, Google forms were released to offer an opportunity for students to nominate one male and female student from their grade for homecoming royalty. From these forms, the five most nominated boys and girls from each grade were selected to compete in the festivities. At the end of homecoming week, the boy and girl from each grade that had more points then the others in their class were crowned champions.
To see which student was the most spirited, a point system was used. Stuco set up a committee to come up with challenges, as well as monitor competing students and to judge students. The idea was simple: each challenge completed offered one point, and the winner would be the student with the most points out of the other students in their group. Challenges ranged from participating in spirit days and going to after school events, all the way to participating in the talent show and doing kind things like buying teachers coffee. These challenges made sure that the competitors had their week packed with challenges, and so that only the most dedicated students would take the crown. Homecoming Queen Abigail Boulden stated in an interview, “It was nice to have an incentive to participate in all the events, and it was an overall great experience.”
The actual competition lasted from Friday the 5th to Wednesday the 10th. After lots of hard work and effort, the winners were as follows: Reed Bird and LaRue Delong for the freshman class, Miles Coleman, Karson Renfro, and Wendie Cohee for the sophomore class, Ezra Coombs and Marley Mcpherson for the junior class, and Noah Wooten and Abigail Boulden for the senior class. These winners were then honored at the homecoming assembly on Thursday, the homecoming football game on Friday in an appearance at half time, and the homecoming dance on Saturday. This competition took up time and effort, and really highlighted the overall theme of homecoming week. Congratulations to all the winners and other contestants for making it through the week, and thank you for your hard work and dedication to our school spirit.
