The Ski season is right around the corner, and, already many people have started to prepare. The Fruita Monument Ski and Board Club is up and running and new people are joining every day. One of the main reasons it’s so popular is because of the trips that the club takes every year to the different resorts. “The trips are usually decided on by voting at club meetings and the form that they fill out when they apply for the club” Said Stanco. Aside from Powderhorn, they have traveled to Crested Butte, Snowmass, Steamboat and other ski areas. Every year the club travels to different resorts based on what the members voted for.
There is also a yearly contest involved. Anyone who wants to have a chance at creating the shirt designs can create a design that is then voted on by the members. The design is then printed on the shirts and every member will get to wear one. The club also has monthly meetings to get to know the members, hand out information, have gift giveaways and of course talk about the slopes.
This year there are some additions to the student officers: Josh Winward, Ben Price, Grant Bazler, Ryder Sisac, Lauren and Grey Heilert. They have done an amazing job of getting the club advertised and getting students interested.
We can also thank the teachers, Darcy Stanco, Abbey Tubbs, Mitchell Main, and Shelby Fredrickson who have been able to put the club together and give students there support to make it happen. “My favorite part about the club is being able to see the students outside of school and trying to improve on something and doing different things. It is just a really good bonding experience and I think it’s cool to see them in a different place outside of the classroom,” said Ms. Stanco.
It is a great place to make friends and improve. All it takes to join the club is fill out the application, pay the fee once you’ve been accepted, and attend the meetings. They encourage anyone who is interested in snowboarding or skiing to join and check it out even if you haven’t ever done it before.
Of course when it comes to skiing and snowboarding the debate always rises on which one is better. Both skiing and snowboarding are super fun and multiple students even do both! In Ms. Stanco’s opinion skiing Is better. “I have never tried snowboarding, and I’m just going to stick with skiing because snowboarding is so dangerous.”
Both Ms. Stanco and Mrs Tubbs ski while Mrs. Fredrickson, and Mr. Main snowboard. Skiing may be less dangerous but snowboarding is worth it to them
The club is super excited to start the season and hopes that lots of students join. Apply as soon as possible for the best chance of getting accepted. Applications close on the 16th of September. Be ready to bring or rent your own skis, boards, helmets, and anything else you might need and be ready to have fun and shred the slopes! Beginners are welcome.
