A friend who you can talk with whenever you want. Someone who can sympathize with you about any and every scenario. Someone who really “gets it.” Some teens find this special “friend” with Snapchat AI. With the rise of AI, there are many questions regarding its effect on many aspects of everyday life. Students using artificial intelligence to write essays and teenagers using it for advice are some ways that AI has already affected our society today. Artificial Intelligence and CGI have come a long way since the debut of the robot baby in “Twilight” (robot baby).
Artificial Intelligence has become a highly regulated and debated topic within schools. Students can use Snapchat AI and ChatGPT artificial intelligence to create essays and other writing assignments for them. Schools are combating this by using different sites to scan students’ work to check, but many students are still getting away with it.
Additionally, this is also an issue within the media industry. Media companies now have the option to write screenplays through Artificial Intelligence which raises the question of how this would apply to copyright. Alan Clarke and Carter Gaines addressed this topic in their article on IPWatchdog. “In recent years, courts have found that in addition to being an original work of authorship, a work must have a human author to be eligible for copyright protection.” It is difficult to apply media protection laws to a piece of work that wasn’t written by an actual human.
While there have been media produced by AI in the past, “…the Copyright Office will not register works produced by a machine or mere mechanical process that operates randomly or automatically without any creative input or intervention from a human author.”
AI is also making an influence in the art realm. People can use AI to generate photos in a certain style or incorporate different elements. The website Craiyon, can depict anything with a few keywords. This presents conflict when things are produced to be thought of as done by a human. This makes original artwork harder to discern, especially if done digitally.
Overall the rise and influence of AI in the film industry is difficult to predict, but it is safe to say that the only certain thing is that only time will tell the long-lasting effects on our media.
