FMHS started off an exciting Homecoming week with many activities and successful sporting events including a boys Golf tournament against Windsor on Monday. The first Hoco activity was strobe light volleyball which also took place on Monday night with the first ever staff team to win the championship in the history of the event. “No Child Left Unspiked” with staff members Moira Hilton, Clinton Davis, Steele Pavlovsky, Amanda Doyle, Kelly Moodry, Kristen Rutkowski, Aaron Moreno, Jeremiah Baskin took the win over “Let’s Get Sendy” which was a team of seniors.
On Tuesday, softball and tennis were both rescheduled due to lighting delays. Softball against Palisade rescheduled to 10/01 and Tennis against Central-GJ to 9/16. Volleyball played their cross-town rivals Grand Junction and pulled out the win 3-1.
The FMHS Talent Show took place on Wednesday, there were many skilled participants but Fruita’s top three came out as Genesis Romero taking third with a singing act, Quinn Trubia in second place with a piano, singing, and harmonica act, and Liberty Thun playing the piano and cashing the check. “We have so many unique abilities as a school, it is nice to be able to showcase them for a night,” said sophomore Luna Heilert.
Thursday was busy for Fruita Monument with many sporting events including boys soccer against Montrose, softball against Grand Junction, and powderpuff football in the afternoon as well. Soccer had a close game but ended up falling just one point short of Montrose with a final score of 4-3. Softball pulled out a close win against Junction in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk off bunt placed by sophomore, Abigail Graham, scoring runner Addison Hopper from first base.
Seniors took the win against the juniors in the Powderpuff game on Thursday evening, and sophomores over the freshman class, but only after a tie and double over-time for the first time in Fruita Powderpuff history.
On Friday, Football had their Homecoming game at Stocker Stadium against Chaparral where they took home the win with a final score of 40-6. “The game was wild bro. I knew we were gonna win but not by that much” said junior Kaitence Turnbull. Cross Country also had a meet hosted by Coal Ridge
High School in New Castle.
To add to the school spirit, Fruita put together an amazing pep assembly with many games and prizes, like a speaker and a flat screen TV, available for students to participate in and win. Principal Newt Klusmire also gave a very heartfelt speech in remembrance of the events that took place on September 11, 2001, which the students and staff followed up with a few moments of silence out of respect. When the class results came out it was clear the seniors swept the class competition with no other grade coming close in competitions like most spirited, loudest student section, and shaving cream twister. The Math department also came out on top in the teacher competition for most spirited, talent show participation, athletics attendance, and event particip
ation.
Saturday was the night of Fruita’s Homecoming dance, but this didn’t stop the FMHS athletes’ grind which was cut short by a lightning delay for the softball game against Montrose, that will be rescheduled for 9/15, and the Volleyball tournament which was also cancelled.
Capping off an exciting Homecoming week, was the “Night in Rio” themed dance including the FMHS homecoming royalty which consisted of LaRue DeLong and Reed Bird of the freshman class, Wendie Cohee, Miles Coleman, and Karsyn Renfro of the sophomore class, Marleigh McPhearson and Ezra Coombs of the junior class, and Noah Wooten and Abby Boulden representing the seniors. This week could not have happened without Fruita’s amazing staff and student council’s hard work and dedication.
