We as humans tend to strive for the highest level. Regardless of what it is, whether it be our jobs, sports, or hobbies, we all want to be as good as we can be. Well, as far as high school is concerned, state level events are about as difficult as it gets. For most sports, there is some sort of state or post-season event where each sports team tries to qualify to compete in, and then attempt to win the state championship title.
However, this changes a lot regarding the world of performing arts. As for choir, orchestra, and band, the competition all happens during auditions, in which the most talented musicians from around the state participate in a test where only the best performers are allowed to perform in the all state concert.
All State Choir auditions for Grand Valley Students were held at CMU on October 10th and 11th, 2025. For Colorado All State Choir, only juniors and seniors were allowed to audition, and the audition consisted of a solo section, and a skills section that tested things like the ability to sing scales or sight read music and rhythms. Fruita was able to qualify seven people for the event this year; the most since 2005.
The FMHS choir director, Aaron Moreno, stated “I’m incredibly, incredibly proud of all the kids that auditioned, and we have a great group of kids getting ready to go to state!”
Out of eleven auditionees from Fruita, Maddie Cox got accepted for the Treble Choir, Kate Kim and Deuce Maulding got accepted for the Tenor Bass Choir, and Jack Beck, Jacob Malnar, Archer Miles, and Noah Wooten all got accepted into the Mixed Choir. These seven auditionees made a huge accomplishment making it here, but they aren’t done working yet.
A last major difference between sports state competitions and choir state is that you have a second audition you have to pass in order to get fully accepted into the choir. This audition is to ensure that participants are fully prepared, judging critically on the participant’s ability to sing the songs they will sing in the concert. Due to this, our seven participants still have to work hard to ensure they won’t be sent home before the event begins.
Senior Jack Beck stated, “I am so excited for this, I cannot wait. It’s a big way to end senior year, and honestly the Cheesecake Factory is the thing I’m most excited for.”
The state event occurs in Denver from February 5th – 7th, which means that, at the time of writing this article, we are approximately two weeks away from the event. The pressure is on, and I wish all participants good luck for second auditions.
