What is religion? Religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods. There are many types of religion and they come in many forms, such as, monotheism, belief in a single deity, such as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism;Polytheism, belief in multiple deities, such as Hinduism; Animism, belief in the divinity of non-human beings, like animals, plants, and natural objects; And atheism, belief in no deities.
Why is this topic important? An article by Mark Stibich named “Why Is Religion Important?” states, “Religion can serve a wide range of purposes. Religion can be a source of comfort and guidance. It can provide a basis for moral beliefs and behaviors. It can also provide a sense of community and connection to tradition. Some research even suggests that it may affect health.”
Religion can provide individual well-being and meaning, religion offers a framework for understanding life’s challenges, reducing stress, and providing emotional comfort during grief. It helps people find meaning and purpose in life. An example of being comforted by religion is from an article called “In Pursuit of Warm Fuzzies: Turning to Faith for Comfort” By the author Julie J. states, “When reflecting on their experiences related to religion, undergraduates and patients at a mental health clinic usually endorsed comforting items on the scale, such as “trusting God to protect and care for you,” “feeling comforted by your faith,” and “feeling loved by God.” These findings supported the idea that for many people, faith—including belief in a loving, protective, trustworthy God—can be a source of comfort and security.”
Religion can have effects in social cohesion and community. Religious groups foster a sense of belonging and community, which is crucial for individual well-being and social support. It also encourages charitable giving, volunteering and support for social causes.
From an article by Monk Prayogshala called “How Religion Influences Behavior” states, “that this system is crucial to thinking patterns and plays a vital role in formation of self-identity and a collective identity of a community, which then shapes attitudes, cultural norms and influences individual and group behaviour.” Therefore religion can influence moral frameworks and ethics, religion often provides a structure for determining right from wrong, influencing people’s personal behavior and fostering values like compassion and humility.
Religion can also have health benefits. Regular attendance at religious services is associated with better immune system function, lower rates of illness, and longer lifespans. This is supported by an article by the company Pressbooks called “Sociological Perspectives on Religion” which states, “Many studies find that people of all ages, not just the elderly, are happier and more satisfied with their lives if they are religious. Religiosity also apparently promotes better physical health, and some studies even find that religious people tend to live longer than those who are not religious.”
Religion can have a cultural and social role, It plays a role in shaping cultural traditions and, in some contexts, influencing legal and social systems.
For many reasons we can see that religion can have impacts on cultures and individuals themselves. Religion is often a controversial topic nowadays, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important. Many people live by religions and this can affect governments, societies, and social interactions. Religion will always be around, how we deal with religion and if we choose religion is up to you.
