High school students come to school to learn math, learn to write, etc., but others decide they would rather not go to school, thinking class is boring or not wanting to do the work given to them. There are various reasons why some students decide to skip classes, but there are also consequences of ditching classes.
In the article “The Impact of Skipping School” by Middle Earth, the author says, “Research shows that student achievement suffers after only five absences. Students who miss more than ten days of school are more than 20 percent less likely to graduate from high school than their peers and are 25 percent less likely to ever enroll in any type of college. Those who drop out are two and a half times more likely to be on welfare than high school graduates.” This shows just how big skipping could get from just a few days of missing school. You’re more than likely to not pass your classes while also increasing the chance of not getting into a good college or not even going to college if that’s what your plan is for the future.
But what are the reasons for skipping if kids know what will happen? Well, in another article called “Top 5 Reasons Teens Skip School,” it says.”When teens feel disengaged from their coursework, unmotivated by a lack of exciting material, or unchallenged by schoolwork that doesn’t match their abilities, it can lead to boredom and chronic absenteeism. Falling behind academically, perhaps due to an unidentified learning disability, can compound these issues. Poor performance and feeling “dumb” erodes self-esteem, making teens less inclined to keep showing up.” This proves how students need motivation to work since they don’t have a choice and would rather do anything else than sit in a class doing work they dislike and lose the desire to show up.
In an interview with an anonymous student, I asked him why he skipped class: “I skip because most of my classes are pretty boring and aren’t fun; it’s kinda pointless to just sit in a boring classroom and do work when I could just skip and hang out with my friends”. In conclusion, the reason why students skip class is because of the lack of motivation to do schoolwork, since most kids don’t think it’s fun to do forced work when they can just hang out with their friends, and the problems that come with skipping can risk you graduating or could affect you getting into a good college.
