If you were to ask anybody with a release if they like it, they’ll probably tell you yes. Someone with an afternoon release may tell you they like going home early and skipping traffic. Someone with a morning release will probably tell you they like sleeping in more and skipping the rush to school. But which one is better and more favored?
Some students, like myself, have morning releases. Whether that be 1st and 2nd, or just 1st hour, many seem to enjoy it. Some benefits of morning releases can be more time to do last minute homework and to get more sleep. Teens need an average of 8-10 hours of sleep per night. “I like my 1st hour release much more than my 8th because I get to sleep in.” said Boden Cowan, a junior. “I should’ve done a 1st and 2nd hour release, honestly. That way I’d get to sleep in more everyday.”
The other portion of students who have releases have them in the afternoons. It could be 7th and 8th, or just 8th. Some of the benefits of having an afternoon release is you get more time in the afternoon to do your own things and have time to do your homework. “I enjoy having an 8th hour release, being able to go home early and beating the traffic. It’s nice, honestly.” Junior Bethany Hayes said.
While both are good, they both come with downsides. If you don’t have a 2nd hour release, you have to come in early on Thursday block days. If you don’t have a 7th hour release, you have to wait out the traffic on Wednesday block days. If you have after school activities, an 8th hour release is kind of inconvenient because you can’t go home, or you don’t have much time at home. Same goes for if you have early morning practices, 1st hour is inconvenient.
Most people I know tend to gravitate towards having a 1st hour release over an 8th hour release. I think the main factor is to get to sleep in more, and not waking up at the crack of dawn. If you’re like me, you like to take your mornings slowly, so a 1st hour release is better for you.
I think overall, it comes down to what works best for you. For some, that might be in the afternoon, and for others it might be in the morning. I think it comes down to what kind of person you are, what activities you’re in, and stuff like that. If you’re considering a release and when, figure out what works best for you.
